Type 2 diabetes (T2D) poses a major health problem globally, especially in many developing countries. In urban India, type 2 diabetes is reaching an epidemic proportion. Diabetes develops at a younger age in Indians, i.e., at least a decade or two earlier than in the Western population. A recent survey in southern India has shown that obesity among adolescent school children was related to decreased physical activity. New research shows that Asian Indian immigrants in the U.S. are at increased risk for chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Asian Indians are currently the second-largest and fastest-growing Asian American group in the U.S., and research has indicated they are often prone to developing obesity, cardio vascular disease and diabetes due to acculturation, specifically unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise.
According to researchers, the prevalence of T2D in both urban and rural India has increased 10-fold in the last two decades. Urbanization, change from traditional healthier diets to those high in refined carbohydrates and fat, and decreased physical activity have contributed to a steep increase in the prevalence of diabetes in India.
To address these issues, Deemsys Inc. has introduced an, “electronic Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Program”, (eT2DPP) through their web portal www.cyberhealths.com. This portal will act as an online behavior therapy weight management and Type 2 diabetes prevention program. CyberHealths is going to be the basic platform to which Deemsys Inc. plan to add various features that will offer a holistic approach to health. With an interdisciplinary team, Deemsys Inc’s CyberHealths online program brings different perspectives on wellness, particularly to Type 2 diabetes prevention and management. Weight loss and diabetes management are challenging psychosocial problems associated with self-management skills and self-discipline. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires ongoing effort. Old habits are hard to beat. Recognizing these barriers and challenges is only one part of the solution. Learning and acquiring the skills to implement permanent lifestyle change even in the face of stiff challenges is the formula for success.
